Dr. Sumit Mukherjee
Dr. Sumit Mukherjee completed his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics in 2019 from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata. The title of his Ph.D. thesis is “Computational Analysis of Riboswitches: detection, distribution, and patterns of gene regulation”. The focus of his doctoral research was to understand the distribution, evolution, and patterns in gene regulation of riboswitches. In his Ph.D. he developed a new tool (Riboswitch Scanner) for the detection of riboswitches and riboswitch-regulated genes from the genomic sequences, also developed a database for riboswitches (RiboD).
During his Ph.D. he received several awards, including the Senior Research Fellowship award from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and also qualified for Research Associateship award from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He qualified for the prestigious PBC fellowship for outstanding postdoctoral researcher award from the Council for Higher Education Israel and will join the Cancer Genomics and BioComputing of Complex Diseases Lab in November 2019.
He is interested in the research area at the interface between regulatory genomics and evolution. He will work on various topics, including ncRNA-mediated regulation in various human diseases, miRNA-based regulation of human-virus interaction, codon bias patterns in viruses, the evolution of genetic code and tRNA modifications.
